A time for thanks and a time for giving
by Kristene Henne, Postdoctoral Program Coordinator (CEPA)

This issue of the Postdoc Journal arrives at the height of the holiday season, and is a perfect opportunity to thank those who have given so much over the last quarter.

Since the last issue of the Postdoc Journal, we held our Fourth Annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium.

I would like to thank Peter Littlewood (PSE), Andrew Skipor (CEPA) and Deep Mukhopadhyay (CNM) for giving the welcoming remarks and Giselle Sandi-Tapia (CSE) for delivering the keynote address at this year’s symposium.

There is so much that goes into these events and it would not have been possible without our colleagues in CEPA, Conference Services, Facilities Management, the APS and CNM staff, Guckenheimer Enterprises and the Argonne Guest House.

Special thanks also to our corporate sponsors and contributors Nalco, UOP/Honeywell, Euchlid Techlabs and MDI for their generous donations and time.

We also saw the success of our First Postdoctoral Career Fair. It was a long journey to bring this event to light.

Twelve companies exhibited and four others contributed by submitting key openings for promotion and attending the research symposium. More than a hundred postdocs attended the fair. Feedback was quite positive from both the postdocs and companies.

We are looking forward to bringing our postdocs this opportunity again next year, on a bigger and better scale.

Again, this was a team effort, with the PSA, CEPA, Talent Acquisition, Technology and Development and Commercialization, laboratory leadership and scientific staff all working together to attract companies to see Argonne’s postdoctoral talent first-hand.

Thanks to all who went the extra mile! Your contributions paid great dividends and will definitely be an asset as we plan next year’s career fair.

Lastly, what you will find in this issue is a new feature: the Guest Column, with this month’s issue focused on safety outside of Argonne.

We have a Career Corner, featuring Sarah O’Brien (BIO) on organizing a professional conference. Kyler Kuehn (HEP) will tell us how he Communicated Science at a recent graduate student conference.

And you will meet this year’s Air Force fellows in the Spotlight section. Our latest CSI-SPU presenters are featured, expanding the safety dialogue to include ergonomics. Please enjoy and continue to share your successes with the rest of the laboratory! - Tina

Postdoc initiates manuscript review group

Yuki Hamada (EVS) recently initiated the Manuscript Development and Review Group (MDRG) in the Environmental Science Division.

The aim of this group is to create a encouraging environment for active publications on peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Some of the benefits of participating in the MDRG include increasing your chances of acceptance by improving the quality of your manuscript prior to submission, encouraging completion of manuscripts and learning more about your colleagues’ recent work.

For more information on how to get involved, contact Yuki Hamada.

Safety impacts your career

When a postdoc applies for a position, safety experience might not end up in the curriculum vitae, but it should. It likely will help land the job. How is this
possible?
