Transportation Security Laboratory
Visiting Scientist Program

The Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Visiting Scientist Program is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in the area of bulk explosives detection technology. The starting stipend payment for the position is $70,000 per year. Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree within the past five years and must be U.S. citizens. More information about the program and the application process can be found at http://www.orau.gov/DHS-TSLvisSciProg/ .

Open TSL Postdoctoral Position

Research Area: The Bulk Explosives Detection Technology area incorporates several areas of research, including: advanced image reconstruction and image quality optimization, microstructural explosive simulant development, active and passive electromagnetic imaging of people, X-ray diffraction imaging, and high-energy (450 keV) X-ray tomography. These areas of research are applicable to screening of passenger baggage, small cargo, or people. Emphasis is on understanding and advancing the state-of-the-art in these technologies to improve security and operational implementation.

Qualifications: Applicants must have received a doctoral degree within five years of the desired starting date in physics, medical physics, machine vision, image processing, signal processing, computer science, electrical engineering, or a relevant field of study. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Benefits:

  • Starting stipend payment of $70,000 per year
  • Medical/health insurance allowance and plan availability
  • Limited travel/moving reimbursement and professional travel opportunities
  • On-site interview travel reimbursement for prospective candidates

Typically appointments are for 12 months, and the start date is flexible. Appointments may be renewed for up to five years contingent upon satisfactory performance, type of appointment and availability of funds.

TSL Background Information

The Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) is a Department of Homeland Security Federal Laboratory located at the William J. Hughes Technical Center, Atlantic City International Airport, New Jersey. The core mission is to enhance homeland security by performing research, development and validation of solutions to detect and mitigate the threat of improvised explosive devices. TSL is internationally recognized for its role in the development of standards, protocols and test articles necessary for detection technology assessments.

The specially designed facilities at the TSL are used to perform research on explosives characteristics and chemistry, suicide detection imaging technology, human factor performance evaluations, and communications. Specialized blast resistant labs are used to evaluate explosive detection equipment and imaging equipment against an extensive library of domestic, foreign, and home-made explosive compounds. TSL's core laboratory capabilities include: Trace Laboratories, Electromagnetic Experimentation Laboratory, Bulk Detection Laboratory, Simulant Development Laboratory, Explosives Effects Laboratory, and Human Factors Laboratory.
