High Sierra Trail Vista
As I recall, this beautiful scene was about 5.5 miles from the Crescent Meadow trailhead of the High Sierra Trail in Sequoia National Park. The exfoliating granite rock faces are seen in many places throughout the park, and are formed by weathering, waterflow, and stress and strain fractures of the rock itself. This particular waterfall has a mild enough slope that it is frequently used as a water slide. The hardiness of the trees in this photo impressed me, since in many places, it appears as though they are growing directly out of the rock. The tribological effects of water erosion are quite apparent!
Tribology is the science and engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It includes the study and application of the principles of friction, lubrication and wear. The word 'tribology' derives from the Greek root
t??ß - of the verb
t??ß? - tribo " ? rub", and the suffix -logy. (Wikipedia)
