This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Engineered Surfaces Center (ESC) at the School of Engineering and Mines (SEM) of the University of North Dakota. The federally funded Center was established in 2005, to undertake research and development in the areas of surface wear and corrosion, in partnership with the government (U.S. Army labs) and industry. The mission of the Center is to undertake basic and applied research, emphasizing advanced surface engineering (super-finishing, laser treatment, thin film coatings), fatigue testing, development of lightweight composite materials and field-deployed renewable energy systems. Additional goals of the Center include stimulating local economic development and transferring technology to local industry.

The Director, who will report to the Dean, will lead and manage the activities of the Center, to help the School of Engineering and Mines contribute to regional economic development, through research, training and technology transfer. The specific roles of the Director include: supervising the research and business aspects of the Center; proposing, procuring and engaging in new research and development projects; identifying and attracting nationally known researchers to affiliate with ESC; ensuring the overall quality of ESC's research and operation; enhancing ESC's local, regional and national reputation; planning for the continued growth of ESC; managing contracts, cooperative agreements and grants with government agencies and industry; engaging collaboratively with government agencies, industry and other partners; and, generating funding to support long-term growth and continuation of the Center.

Requires an advanced degree in metallurgical or material engineering, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or an equivalent discipline; extensive experience in R&D and in working with defense and government agencies; demonstrated leadership experience; an established research record; and, demonstrated experience in procuring financial support for major research projects.
