What is a Near Hit?
A Near Hit is an event or unsafe condition that could have caused a serious injury or illness, but instead was identified and fixed before an incident occured.
How did I report a Near Hit?
- Contact your supervisor, division director, or ESH Coordinator as soon as possible.
- Verify that the Near Hit is not an incident that must be entered into the DOE's Occurrence Reporting Processing System or is accident/injury reportable.
- Fill out the ANL-901 Near Hit submission form, now called the Argonne CSI Form, available online here.
How the program worked.
- From the submitted Near Hits, five Postdoctoral members were chosen per quarter to present their Near Hit at a Postdoctoral meeting.
- The five candidates prepared and gave a short (3 minute) presentation about their Near Hit situation or event.
- From the five choices, a winner was determined for best Near Hit "catch" by their Postdoctoral peers through an "applause-o-meter".
- The winner recieved a $250 bonus, and was eligible to present their Near Hit (along with the other Quarterly winners) for a chance to win the $1000 annual Near Hit award.
