Graduate and Undergraduate Student
Nuclear Engineering Internships
Program: The Graduate and Undergraduate Student
Internships are intended to enhance the education of students majoring in
science, mathematics, engineering, technology, or other areas that support the
mission of the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Program. The Department of
Energy's (DOE) Nuclear Reactor Technology lead laboratories are Argonne
National Laboratory (ANL) and the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental
Laboratory (INEEL). These laboratories will make awards to eligible graduate
and undergraduates through a grant from DOE. The internships provide an
intensive introduction to science and engineering careers through the guidance
of experienced mentors. Graduate-level internships in the program are available
at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Eligibility: The program is open to students who have
completed their sophomore year and are currently enrolled as a full-time
student at the time of application. All awards are contingent upon security
access approval by the host laboratories. Participants will not be allowed to
commence with the program until this approval is given.
Qualifications: Applicants will be reviewed on the basis of
academic performance and class standing, career goals, recommendations, and
compatibility of educational interests and abilities with the needs of ANL,
INEEL, and ORNL.
Award: An internship award includes placement on a
project with a stipend starting at $400/week and a housing allowance not to
exceed $75/week. Travel to and from the laboratories or home institution may be
included in the award. Participants are encouraged to seek academic credit at
their home institution.
Selection: Internship awards are based on mentor's
selection and project funding availability. Interns will be notified by the end
of March 2004.
Duration: The internship term is 10-12 weeks for summer
appointments. Renewals are competitive and require a yearly updated
application.
Health
Insurance: Each
participant is required to have coverage under a health insurance plan. It is
the responsibility of each participant to secure his or her own insurance
coverage before arriving at the appointment site.
