INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM

SFANS/ANS/2006

STUDENT EXCHANGE PROPOSAL

TITLE:          Detailed thermal-hydraulic channel flow computations with blockage:  application to Gas-Cooled Reactor prismatic core assembly

SUBJECT:    A Gas-Cooled Reactor (GCR) concept with a prismatic core assembly is considered.  Forced convection Helium flow in cylindrical channels provides efficient heat removal.  The accidental condition under which a channel is blocked may prove problematic as it may induce local heating of the core above allowable limits.  The study consists of two parts:

-Comparison between a homogenized (porous media) flow and heat transfer model and a detailed assembly calculation in which the channels are

              represented for nominal flow conditions

-Study of the case where a channel is blocked – detailed model and homogenized model

TOOLS:        CAST3M structural mechanics and fluid mechanics code, Finite Element methods

PERIOD:     6 months, starting at the earliest in March 2006
