Pre-College Research Participation Program
Summer 2013

Argonne National Laboratory, one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s major research centers, is pleased to announce research participation opportunities for local Illinois high school students who will graduate in May/June 2013.


Eligibility


To be considered, an applicant must meet all eligibility requirements and submit an electronic application comprising of all required materials. To assess eligibility, and prior to the merit assessment and evaluation, an initial review of all applications will be conducted to verify applicant eligibility and ensure all the required applications have been provided. Only those applications meeting the requirements will be advanced for merit review and selection. The application materials received will provide the sole basis for the evaluation selection.


Students are recruited from all local area high schools and must: (a) be 18 years of age at start of program; (b) be interested in a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics; (c) have an overall grade point average of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale; (d) be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident; (e) graduated from a local Illinois high school in May/June 2013; (f) enrolled to attend college full-time in Fall 2013..


Notification


Students who are selected will be notified by email. The email will include the official offer package providing details of the project. Only one offer will be extended to an applicant during an application period. If the applicant declines, no additional or alternative offer will be made.


Financial Information


During the appointment period, participants receive a stipend of $400 per week. Stipends are considered taxable income by the IRS. The Laboratory is required by law to report this income.


Transportation and Housing


Daily transportation is the responsibility of the students and parents. Housing is not available for the Pre-College Program.


Program Dates and Hours

June 10, 2013 to August 2, 2013.


This is a 40 hour per week program and therefore, you will be expected to participate Monday through Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


Teacher Recommendation Letters


Give the teacher recommendation forms to three (3) of your high school science or mathematics/computer science teachers. The letters must be submitted no later than March 31, 2013. Under no circumstances will letters be accepted after the deadline.

 


 

Application Requirements

The application requirements includes a completed application and three (3) letters of recommendation from science/mathematics teachers. Applicants are encouraged to make the requests for recommendation letters as soon as possible.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to inform their recommenders that they must submit the recommendation letter before the deadline. Please be advised that it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the application is complete by the deadline. Under no circumstances will applications or recommendation letters be accepted after March 31, 2013.

Application Procedure

The online application system for summer 2013 will be open on February 8, 2013 and will close on March 31, 2013. No application or supporting materials will be accepted after March 31, 2013. We are no longer accepting applications for the Summer 2013 Pre-College Resarch Participation Program as the deadline has now passed.
