Introduce a Girl to
Engineering Day
For National Engineers Week 2006, the engineering
community is making plans to participate
in "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day" (IGED) on Thursday,
February 23, 2006. Argonne
National Laboratory (ANL) is participating in this event by holding a “Job
Shadowing” day for
middle school aged girls.
The organizing committee is now accepting applications for program consideration. Students participating must be in 6th through 8th grade, and ideally should be someone who you think would
benefit from seeing engineering in action. Qualified students will be selected by lottery. Students
selected will be notified in advance of the event by the laboratory. Transportation to and from the event
is the responsibility of the participating student's parent or guardian. Students are required to wear long
pants and low or no heeled shoes suitable for significant walking. Completed applications are due
Wednesday, February 1, 2006. The program is limited to 40 students. This is the fifth year that
Argonne National Laboratory is hosting this exciting event.
The job shadowing day at Argonne will consist of pairing up a middle school
aged girl with an
engineer mentor for the day. The students should gain from this experience
the following:
- Provides an answer to the questions, "Why do I have
to learn this?" and "Would I want to make engineering a career?"
- Gives a view into all aspects involved in a job. Students
can observe not only job characteristics and responsibilities, but also what an engineering
profession requires on a day-to-day basis.
- Lets students learn first-hand what it takes to make it
in their fields of interest from the people who know best - working professionals. Helps students
decide what high school courses will prepare them for this profession.
