Nuclear Fuel Cycle Summer Program Cross-Cutting Technologies for a Sustainable Energy Future
Application Deadline: February 1, 2005
The Program
Energy security is a critical need of the nation - one that can only be solved through technical innovation and research. Sustainable nuclear power will be a cornerstone of that solution, and the development of nuclear fuel cycle technologies will be the enabler. Participants joining this multidisciplinary summer program will be introduced to the interesting and challenging research on the nuclear fuel cycle that cross-cuts nuclear reactor physics and design, fuels, chemical separation processes, repository science, actinide chemistry, materials science and engineering, nonproliferation, advanced computing and simulation, systems analyses, economics, power generation, the hydrogen economy, and clean-water technologies.
Over the course of the summer, participants will work on projects relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle and participate as a team in several activities designed to explore cross-cutting topics in this area. The summer will begin with a kick-off conference providing an overview of government-sponsored research on the nuclear fuel cycle. Throughout the summer, participants will have opportunities to discuss technologies and tour facilities with researchers actively engaged in the nuclear research and development mission. At the end of the summer, participants will share the results of their projects at a conference featuring their posters or presentations.
This program evolved from a workshop held in summer 2004. Information on that workshop is available on the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Summer Program web site ( www.cmt.anl.gov/NFC/ ). The program extends for a ten week period which begins on May 31, 2005 and runs through August 5, 2005 . There is some limited flexibility in the appointment period.
To apply for this program, specify " NFC" in your application as well as the number(s) associated with the Argonne research project(s) for which you are applying.
Eligibility
Undergraduate students attending U.S. universities and majoring in engineering, chemistry, physics or materials science. This program also is open to faculty and graduate students. Faculty can apply through the Faculty Research Participation Program and graduate students should apply through the Research Aide Programs described in this publication.
Financial Information
Housing allowances, transportation, and stipends are provided to participants. The stipend is $400.00 per week. Round trip costs to come to Argonne is provided to students who live more than 50 miles away (some restrictions apply). Local transportation will be provided once a student has accepted an offer. A housing allowance is provided when housing is not directly provided. No tuition or fees are paid to your university.
Transportation Reimbursement
Transportation expenses are reimbursed for one round trip between your home or academic institution (wherever you are located immediately prior to the start of your appointment and wherever you go immediately following your appointment) and the facility. Travel will usually be paid only for students whose permanent address is more than fifty miles away from Argonne . Transportation expenses will be reimbursed on the basis of the most direct route. Travel by a private automobile will be reimbursed at the current government rate up to a maximum of $350.00 or the cost of the lowest commercial airfare, whichever is lower. Travel by air will be reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare.
Housing
Apartment type lodging facility on site.
