Energy Resource Development Tribal Internship Program

The Program

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, a major research center, is pleased to announce a unique summer internship program for American Indian and Native Alaska (AI/NA) college students. The Department of the Interior's Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development (IEED) worked together to identify strategic opportunities for internships based on current Argonne programs and mentorship availability. Potential research arenas are focused on energy resource development, both renewable and non-renewable, and environmental evaluation and analysis of potential impacts from energy resource development activities. To facilitate the program DEP will collaborate with the Environmental Sciences Division in providing scientific and technical mentoring for interns.

The DEP has designed a residential program to host twelve undergraduates, selected by Argonne, during the summer of 2010. Students would be in residence at the laboratory for ten weeks.

A key element of the internship experience is Tribal involvement. Argonne will recruit interns from public, private and Tribal Institutions of higher learning.

The program begins May 25, 2010 however there is some flexibility in the appointment period. If your application is sent in before the March 15^th deadline, you would be eligible for early acceptance. In addition to research activities, participants attend a series of seminars and tours dealing with current topics in science and engineering.

Eligibility

This program is only for US Citizens' and must be a Native American as defined as a member of a Federally-recognized Tribe, Alaska Village or Alaska Corporation (not state-recognized, not bands or groups, or first peoples of Guam or Hawaii). Applicants must pass a pre-employment security check.

American Indian and Alaska Native students are recruited from undergraduate institutions and in addition applicants must : (a) be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student; (b) be 18 years or older at the start of the program; (c) be eligible to work in the United States and hence be requested to provide required information upon acceptance to this program; (d) have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above out of 4.0; (e) submit Tribal Enrollment documentation and (f) have health insurance.

Financial Information

Transportation and stipends are provided to participants. The stipend is $425.00 per week. Round trip costs to come to Argonne is provided to students who live more than 50 miles away (some restrictions apply). Local transportation will be provided once a student has accepted an offer. Housing on-site will be provided free of charge. No tuition or fees are paid to your university.

Transportation Reimbursement

Transportation expenses are reimbursed for one round trip between your home or academic institution (the address on the student's drivers license will be used to establish eligibility for travel reimbursement) and the facility. Travel will usually be paid only for students whose permanent addresses established by your drivers license is more than fifty miles away from Argonne . Transportation expenses will be reimbursed on the basis of the most direct route. Travel by a private automobile will be reimbursed at the current government rate up to a maximum of $350.00 or the cost of the lowest commercial airfare, whichever is lower. Travel by air will be reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare. Travel arrangements are arranged by the host Division at Argonne .

Application Packet

The packet contains an application form and two Student Evaluation Forms. The application form is to be completed and signed by the student applicant. The Student Evaluation Forms should be completed by faculty members familiar with the applicant and then be placed in sealed envelopes and returned to the applicant for inclusion with the completed application form. Alternately, faculty evaluators may elect to mail the evaluation form directly to the above address.
