279-DEP-1 : SOLAR CELLS (This project is part of EVS Division)

Research at Argonne is being carried out to design and fabricate solar cells that will ultimately be more efficient and less costly than current technologies. This effort addresses the main challenges facing the implementation of cost effective solar energy systems, which include absorbing more of the sun's energy and more effectively converting it to electricity. The goal is the production of solar cells using less costly organic, or carbon-based, semiconductors made from polymers. Hybrid systems incorporating inorganic nanomaterials are also being investigated.
