284-DEP-1 : FIELD STUDIES AT AMERIFLUX SITES AT FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY (This project is part of EVS Division)

Two Ameriflux sites have been installed at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for the purpose of measuring the fluxes of carbon dioxide, water vapor, heat, and momentum over two surfaces (prairie and agricultural). These systems consist of an Automatic Weather Station and An Eddy Correlation System.

An intern would work with the Climate Research Section on a project support level, providing assistance with field studies at our Ameriflux sites at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. A short term study of prairie canopy energy storage (including data collection, compilation, and analysis) would form the center of the student's activities, but several other field activities would be included. Included in these studies could be sampling of biomass for weight and moisture content, radiation studies for the determination of vegetation indices, field calibrations, and general field work. This work would provide the student with hands on experience in performing scientific studies in the field and a sense of the effort required to collect quality field measurements.
