Argonne National Laboratory Tribal Internship Program
285-DEP-1 : OIL AND GAS DEVELOPMENT EFFECTS ON THE OUTER CONTINENTAL SHELF (This project is part of EVS Division)
Argonne is providing support to the Department of the Interior Minerals Management Service (MMS) in the conduct of impact analyses for oil and gas development activities on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) of the US . This support includes a variety of tasks associated with characterizing the nature and magnitude of potential impacts of oil and gas development to specific natural resources such as marine mammals, coastal and pelagic birds, marine turtles, and fisheries, as well as economic impacts of oil and gas development. The geographic areas that would be covered by this support include in the lower 48 states the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and the Gulf of Mexico . In Alaska , the project area may include the Gulf of Alaska, the North Aleutian Basin , and the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas .
The staff conducting the impact characterization support to MMS would work with an intern to identify a project that matches the intern's interests and experience. For example, an intern for this project could work on a related research topic, providing a paper at the conclusion of the internship that would be used for project-related analyses. Examples of such topics include identifying and collecting available information on the effects of seismic survey noise on the behavior of marine turtles. The intern could support Argonne technical staff with data collection and compilation, tracking progress, coordinating editorial revisions, and maintaining project records.
