Recent surveys have shown that Computer Science undergraduate enrollment has been significantly decreased since 2000 (e.g., An article titled “The Weird Campus” published on March 6, 2008 in Chronicle of Higher Education tells that a recent Taulbee Survey shows Computer Science Undergraduate enrollment dropped from 15,958 in 2000 to 7,915 in 2007. See Reference 1 for details). To address some challenging issues in computer science field such as undergraduate enrollment, Argonne National Laboratory, Governors State University, and Joliet Junior College, under the funding support from National Science Foundation (NSF), develop several Community Building Teams (CBT). Part of the goal of these teams is to understand the industry requirements for Computer Science students, and try to reform Computer Science curriculums based on these industry requirements.
As one team in this research project, we, one faculty member and two students from Governors State University, visit a few local employers in Chicago metropolitan area, interview different employees, and try to understand industry needs for Computer Science students. Our presentation will report our discovery during these visits.
