Supervisor: Dr. John Mitchell

Summary of Research:

I make new solid state materials using high-pressure synthesis. The materials currently under exploration include: (i) metastable high-pressure phases from tungsten or molybdenum framework solids (negative thermal expansion materials); (ii) multiferroics of the MTiO 3 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) family; and (iii) new superconductors in the REOFeAs (RE = rare earth metal) family of oxypnictides. Beyond synthesis, my work includes the crystal structure determination, as well as physical property characterization of the materials made. I am also interested in how the materials' electronic and physical/chemical properties correlate. My collaborations also include relevant theoretical calculations/predictions.
