I am now a professor of Geology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; I continue to specialize in organic geochemistry with a particular focus on coals and fossil resins. My work on coal is focused on development of environmentally benign strategies for the utilization of coal as an abundant and readily available source of energy and raw materials both in the U.S. and the developing world. My efforts related to fossil resins are focused on investigations of the evolution of higher plants and on the use of fossil resins as chemotaxonomic markers.
