ANL Research Highlights
I came to Argonne in 2003 to be a part of the Nuclear Engineering Division’s nonproliferation efforts. As a Named Post-Doctoral Fellow, I was given the freedom to explore multiple projects within the Division, and I found my home in the Technical Nonproliferation Policy Support Section (TNPS) of the Department of National Security and Nonproliferation. TNPS is a group of scientists and engineers who are dedicated to preventing the spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and the missiles that could be used to deliver them. We use our technical expertise to train cargo inspectors to identify “dual-use” materials and equipment – items that have commercial uses but that could also contribute to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs. We also conduct proliferation risk analyses of proposed exports of dual-use items and develop technical resources to keep decision makers informed of advances in science and technology that could pose a proliferation threat. These activities support several offices within the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Nonproliferation and International Security.
Joining TNPS as a post-doctoral fellow gave me the opportunity to use my background in chemistry to address a critical problem in today’s world: the global threat of WMD proliferation. It has also given me the opportunity to grow my skills in new ways: I’ve used my chemical knowledge and writing skills to develop handbooks on dual-use chemical commodities, my research skills to conduct proliferation risk analyses, my interest in education to develop training course materials, and my communication skills to train customs inspectors in fifteen countries (and counting). I’ve also been able to develop new skills by leading technical interactions with three of our program’s partners in the Asia-Pacific region.
New Endeavors
I am now a staff member in TNPS and look forward to continuing to support our mission to stop the spread of WMD.
