Scientific and Luminary Biography - James Wallace Givens

James Wallace Givens

James Wallace Givens was born in December 14 1910 in Alberene, Virginia. He was awarded his bachelor's degree at age 17 (in 1927) by Lynchburg College, his master's degree from the University of Virginia, and his doctorate in mathematics from Princeton. During his studies at Princeton, he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study as assistant to Professor Oswald Veblen. His career included teaching at the University of Tennessee, Wayne State University and Northwestern University before his appointment in 1960 as senior scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. He is a well known mathematician and pioneer in the field of computer science died March, 5, 1993.

About the Argonne National Laboratory Named Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Argonne offers these special postdoctoral fellowships to be awarded internationally on an annual basis to outstanding doctoral scientists and engineers who are at early points in promising careers. The fellowships are named after scientific and technical luminaries who have been associated with the laboratory, its predecessors and the University of Chicago since the 1940s.
