Middle School Science Bowl

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.

Argonne is excited to be a regional host site for the National Middle School Science Bowl competition for the northern Illinois region which includes: Cook County (west of Harlem Ave), Lake, DuPage, Will, Kane, and Grundy Counties. The National Science Bowl is made up of two team competitions: an academic and a model electric car challenge. The Academic Science Bowl is a competition where teams compete in a fast-paced, Jeapardy-style environment to answer questions of math and science concepts. The Electric Car Challenge is a design competition where student build battery-powered cars and race them for best speed and performance. All teams are strongly encouraged to compete in both the academic and car competition this year. The winner of the academic competition must compete in the regional car competition. The winning team will advance to the National Science Bowl tournament in Washington, DC, which includes both academic and car competitions.

Teams are made up of 4-5 middle school students ages 11-14. To be eligible to compete, a middle school student must be enrolled for the current school year in grades 6, 7, or 8 at the team’s school, and be born on or after September 1, 1998 and on or before April 24, 2004. Each participating team must have a coach (teacher or school approved adult) mentoring and managing the team. See Eligible Organizations. See Science Bowl Key Documents and Resources for a full list of important items.

On January 20, 2014, Martin Luther King Holiday, the coach for each approved team for either event  must attend a Coaches’ Meeting at Argonne. The meeting begins at 9:00 am and ends at about 1:00 pm.

Academic Competition

In this competition, 28 middle school teams answer multiple-choice and short-answer questions of various science and math concepts. Teams compete in a fast-paced, Jeopardy-style competition that includes preliminary and double-elimination matches. A match consists of two 8-minute halves with a 2-minute break in between. Academic sponsors are Argonne National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Registration is now CLOSED. Please note that only one team per school can apply for this competition. Teams will be selected on first-come, first served basis in the order their application was received.

  • January 8, 2014 - Regional team decisions are announced
  • February 7 & 8, 2014 - the Regional Science Bowl Competition at Argonne
  • April 24-28, 2014 - the National Science Bowl Competition at Washington DC (50 middle school teams are expected to compete in this year’s program)

Electric Car Challenge

April 5, 2014 is the Regional Car Competition at Case New Holland Company in Burr Ridge, IL.  In this competition, students build and race model electric cars. Some teams will compete in the static design competition. Both competitions require students to use applied science and engineering skills to meet technical challenges like those that scientists and engineers face when creating a light-weight, low-friction vehicle with efficient gearing, chassis integrity and robust performance. Eligible teams receive a regulation motor, battery and charger, and a few assorted parts. The team needs to provide and design the rest of the car. For the race competition all cars run in heats until the top-performing car is determined.

In the Car Challenge, students:

  • Develop teamwork and problem-solving skills,
  • Learn by tweaking, testing and writing a design document,
  • Compete and interact with other talented students and,
  • Meet and interact with scientists and engineers.

The Electric Car Challenge sponsors are Argonne National Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy and Case New Holland.

Eligible Organizations

The National Science Bowl® is a school-based competition. Teams of home-schooled students will be considered to belong to a school as long as they are part of an official home school association.

No new club teams will be approved. However, a middle school club team that participated in a 2013 National Science Bowl® regional event is eligible to compete in the same regional event for the years 2014 and 2015 only, provided:

  1. The school that a club team member attends is NOT competing in a National Science Bowl® regional event, and
  2. The membership/composition of the club teams may not be restricted on the basis of race, creed, gender, ethnicity, or national origin, and

A parent/guardian of each club team member must sign and submit the “Parental Consent for Non-school Sponsored Teams” form that will be provided by the regional event coordinator upon submission of the team registration.
