Chicago Regional Middle School Science Bowl
Academic Competition-- February 8, 2006
Fuel-Cell & Solar Competitions-- April 29, 2006

Teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders are invited to participate in one or more event...

Each competition will have a winning team!
The team with the best combined ranking in the
Academic and Fuel-Cell events
will represent the Chicago region at the
National Middle School Science Bowl
,
June 21-24, 2006 at the University of Denver

Academic Competition -- Fuel Cell Car Competition

To be eligible for the National competition, a team must participate in both Academic and Fuel Cell Car regional competitions, and must consist of four students from one school (6th-8th grade) or four home-school students (ages 11-14), with one or two coaches. Teams are allowed to have one alternate student member, however only 4 students at a time compete in the Academic competition, and in the event that your team is the Regional winner, only 4 students will be invited to the Nationals.

Registration opens November 10, 2006
No teams may register for Dual Academic & Fuel Cell competitions
after January 18, 2006

2005 Chicago Regional Science Bowl Sponsors

The Chicago Regional Science Bowl is sponsored by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The Solar & Fuel Cell Car portion of the competition is sponsored by DOE and ANL, joined by CNH, General Motors, and the Society of Automotive Engineers

Academic Competition (Question & Answer)
April 9th at Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 S. Cass Ave. in Argonne, IL.
Building 402, APS Conference Center

Ten or more teams will compete in this fast-paced "quiz-show" style, head-to-head competition, which will include round-robin and double-elimination components.
In this competition students answer either multiple-choice or short-answer questions relating to science and math facts or concepts. There are two types of question: "toss-up" and "bonus." Toss-up questions (4 points) may be answered by any member of either team, with no collaboration. Teams successfully answering a toss-up question get a chance to answer a bonus question (10 points), on which team members may collaborate. A representative set of practice questions will be sent to each participating team.

To be eligible to represent the region in the National Middle School Science Bowl, teams must enter both the Academic competition and the Fuel Cell Car Competition.

Registration for Dual Academic & Fuel Cell Car competition closes November 10, 2005

Fuel Cell Car Competition

The car competition requires students to use applied science, and engineering skills to meet technical challenges comparable to those that scientists and engineers face to provide a lightweight, functional vehicle with an efficient powertrain, optimal gearing, minimal friction, and excellent performance. Developing a successful design requires experimentation, teamwork, and organization.

Teams will use parts from a fuel cell car kit to build their vehicle. The cars, guided by wires running the length of the 10' course, will be raced in heats until the top-performing cars are determined. In addition to prizes for the top-performing teams, prizes will be awarded for team with the best design and best working knowledge of the principles and considerations for using fuel cells to power model vehicles.

To be eligible to represent the region in the National Middle School Science Bowl, teams must enter both the Academic competition and the Fuel Cell Car Competition
